Summer Garden Basket
Hello lovely people,
I spent quite a bit of time playing around with jute garden twine earlier this year and this is one of the things I created using it. It is the second little crochet twine basket that I have designed so far. I found the first one really useful and decided I wanted a similar sized basket, but this time with just one handle. In the future, I think that I may alter the pattern for the handle slightly, but that is a project for another time.
Like the previous pattern I posted, this little basket is also available on Ravely as a free download.
I hope you like it.
Summer Garden Basket
By Jessi-catThis adorable little basket is made of jute garden twine, which gives it a lovely rustic aesthetic. It has an oval shaped base and one long handle that spans the width of the basket.
I bought a large 315-meter ball of natural jute twine, and it used about a third of the ball. So, I would suggest having around 100 meters of jute twine to complete the pattern.
You will also require a 6 mm crochet hook and a large sewing needle.
This pattern uses the US form of crochet terminology:
Ch : chain
Hdc : half double crochet (I will be using this to indicate both the instruction and where on the row below)
Sc : single crochet
Sl st : slip stitch
Section 1: oval base
You will notice that with these instructions I have also included an ‘equation’ shorthand form beneath the instructions for the later rounds. I hope this helps to demonstrate the pattern of increases that form the oval base.
Make
a chain of 7
1.
Round 1: (string tail underneath)
Ø
1 hdc (half double crochet) into second ch
from hook,
Ø
1 hdc in back loop of each of next three ch,
Ø
in last loop hdc three times
Ø
turning as you crochet around chain: 1 hdc into
each of next 3 ch, hdc two times in the final loop
Ø
slip stitch into first hdc (make sure it is
attached to the first hdc, not the chain as this can cause confusion)
Ø
turn over (upside down)
In all rounds hdc in two of the three top loops. I chose to work
the ‘inside’ or top side two (the ‘tail’ of the string being on the underside).
As a result, the ‘ridge’ formed by the third loop will be on the underside, and
following on, up the outside of the basket.
